Sacrifice
“Only time and effort reveal the truth of the Force. It is not a quick and easy path.”
The hot and fiery pits that became her tomb could not possibly hold her spirit to this day. The Jedi had gone to look for an antidote for a weapon known as “swamp gas”. Master Obi-Wan and others were at hand, and there they met Dark Lady Asajj. This would be a costly gathering.
The great Jedi healer used her mind to incapacitate the great Asajj temporarily. But the chemical factory had already started being destroyed. Upon their escape, Dark Lady Asajj came back and stabbed the healer with both sabers. Obi-Wan, clinging to the walkway, had the antidote, and the healer lay beside him on the ground. Asajj, as all decent villains do, let them go to die in the exploding factory. But the healer had another idea.
She infused her energies with Obi-Wan, giving him all that she had left in her. “You will escape… you will live… and I go to join our brothers and sisters… finally.”
He did escape, and he did live. And he returned the antidote to the Jedi Temple to save even more lives. Master Obi-Wan was distraught over the healer’s sacrifice that day, for many eons. But Master Mace had sage words for him. “The Force kept her alive for many hundreds of years, Obi-Wan. And in that time, she saved many thousands of lives. And by ensuring that you lived, she has saved millions.”
Master Fay was a great Master and she, as have many before and after her, gave her life for the good of the many. That, my friends, is sacrifice.
There is a lot we must sacrifice as Jedi. Not necessarily our lives, although that happens from time to time. But we sacrifice our living lives to the will of the Force. We sacrifice our energies to those around us so that they may live in peace. We sacrifice all our time and will so that we may better ourselves and become closer to the Force.
“We all have our freedom. But as Jedi, we choose to sacrifice our freedom to the Force, which is emotionless and objective.” -Lady Lorelei.
There was a young man who was a close study of the saber. There were many a time he accompanied fellow Jedi on missions and tasks. One in particular required we travel to the old hidden cantina. Occasionally, not-so-nice folk could be found there. We were met with some resistance when it ended up our contact would not be there. Instead, there were a few Dark Lords waiting for myself, the fellow mentioned here, and another consular.
I did what I could to hold them off mentally and diplomatically, but a fight broke out. It was even enough that we were able to find the door to get out of there. If you recall, it is not always our goal to kill and evasion can be a victory as well. This would be our aim, and I tried to get my young Jedi friends out. But the Guardian would not go. He kept fighting so that we two consulars could continue. While he did not die that day, he slowly died of his injuries.
“Sometimes when one cares for something, one has to detach oneself rather than attach oneself.” Master Leonardis had it right – we are here to sacrifice ourselves to the will of the Force. That is the reason for being for a Jedi.
